Gardening Practice

For Doug, his practice of gardening is integral to and as important as his painting practice. He sees these two modes of repetitive making as intersecting currents in his life, which influence each other, resulting in a rich focus on the bodily experience in the Landscape.

Douglas has grown up with many nurturing horticultural influences, including his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents, industry professionals and friends. He is a trained horticulturist and operates a small gardening business called Garden Antics.

Doug and his partner Cal Agnew’s rental garden was featured in Gardening Australia TV and magazine in 2021, in which Doug gives insight to his artistic practice.

Douglas notes “Gardens reveal our complex relationship to Landscape; I believe they indicate a deep desire for closeness with Nature and a compulsion to curate and control it.”
